Abstract
InPortugal, literacy research has a well-defined starting point: the National Literacy Study. This article revisits that research, as well as the main developments that followed it. It begins by contextualising the project in the wider context of international surveysonadult competencies, highlighting its uniqueness and also the sharing of conceptual frameworks and modes of operationalisation. Almost thirty years after the initial studies, both societies at large and the extensive research onadult skills and competencies have undergone considerable changes, and PIAAC, the international programme currently underway, represents an opportunity to update knowledge about the literacy of adult population in Portugal.
