Abstract

Introduction. Ozone therapy accelerates the regeneration of tissues, improves the rheological properties of blood, has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties; it also modulates the immune system, which coupled with the antiseptic effect has led to its therapeutic use in many areas of medicine. Aim of the study. To present the therapeutic properties and mechanisms of the use of ozone in various fields of dentistry, based on a literature review. Material and method. The key words ‘ozone’ and ‘dentistry’ were used to search the PUBMED database with articles in English from 1950 to 2016, as well as Polish language articles published in 2004-2010 using the terms ‘ozone therapy’ and ‘dentistry’. Results. Out of 274 articles, 152 were checked. After analysing the abstracts, 73 papers were selected, including 4 general-term works, 35 in the field of conservative dentistry, 17 related to periodontics, 8 to oral surgery, 7 to orthodontics and paedodontics, and 6 thematically concerned prosthodontics. Ozonotherapy was presented as an auxiliary method of treatment of the pathology of hard tissues of deciduous and permanent teeth, adjunct to treatment of oral soft tissues and as a complementary treatment during surgical procedures. In dental prosthetics, it was used for disinfecting abutments, implants and removable prosthetic restorations. Conclusions. Very few articles about the use of ozone therapy in prosthetic treatment have been found. It seems reasonable, therefore, to carry out research towards possibilities of wider use of ozone in this field of dentistry.
