Abstract
This article tries to understand the cultural meanings attributed to work experiences, from the oral histories of a couple dekassegui. It is considered that labour relations are inserted culturally. To study them, we used the conceptualization developed by Fischer (1987). The author says that there are three instances that determine patterns of employment relationships -- the policy, the Organization of the work process and human resources policy. From the data of the survey, it was observed that the Japanese culture assigns meanings to work independence, discipline, hierarchy, and efficiency. And the descendants, on work experience in Japan, are characterized as uneven, precarious and culturally distinct. Thus, it is possible to affirm that the dekasseguis feel Brazilians in Japan, by the condition of ethnic minority and inequality at work, and Japanese in Brazil by different habits and customs, strengthening the sense of rootlessness.
