Abstract

Local elections often lead to horizontal conflict in the community because in the implementation of the direct election the emotional distance between the candidate figure and the mass of supporters or the mass of voters is very close. This can trigger the birth of very strong fanaticism towards each candidate. In addition, the community also feels its importance in real local flows. As a result, the level and sense of belonging and their involvement in the political agendas of each candidate is very high. These factors are feared to be a trigger for the emergence of horizontal conflicts. On the other hand, regional elections can foster a democratic credo in the country, including in the city of Makassar. This can be measured by the involvement of citizens in each election implementation, or in other languages psychologically citizens are involved in politics or are concerned with public issues. Therefore the direct election is a good thing in the process of growth and development of democracy in the country, including in the city of Makassar. Through the implementation of regional autonomy which was used as a medium to decentralize the democratic system that was increasingly refined. Through this election, it is hoped that it will stimulate and stimulate the growth of new pro-democracy forces in the region. In another sense, through direct regional head elections, democratic actors will be born in the region, who are then expected to be able to make political contracts with all components of society, and be able to make new movements for change.
