Abstract

Understanding hematology, coagulation, and associated pathologies is essential for the vascular surgeon. Frequently used medications by a vascular surgeon include warfarin, aspirin, plavix, and heparin. Hypercoagulopathy is associated with pregnancy, smoking, HIT, antithrombin III deficiency, Factor V Leiden, and lupus anticoagulant, among others. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), inherited bleeding disorders (Hemophilia, vWD), and uremia are also important to identify peri-operatively for optimal patient care.
