Abstract
Currently, exercising the leadership role in educational centers offering compulsory basic education in Spain is a complex and difficult task. Factors that give rise to this situation include the perceived lack of professionalism. This article is intended to provide a professional development model based on the management profile and specific training, as the path towards the professionalization of this function. To this end, it analyzes the competences and training needs of school principals from a regulatory and research framework. The competence profile obtained is twofold: the school principal as leader and as technical manager, but with a greater emphasis on leadership. On the basis of the skills defined various proposals are presented for improvement to the current training model, because in most communities the contents of the training courses for school principals is confined to essentially formal or management-related aspects, despite a philosophy of training them to offer effective leadership.
