Abstract
The effects of either daily doses of 400 UI vitamin D, along the first six months of life or 600000 IU doses at ages 1 and 6 month on bone metabolism and growth were evaluated in two groups of normal infants up to the eighth month of life. Weight, height, head circumference, serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone and 1.25 (OH) 2 vit D, were compared. Statistically significant favourable differences for daily doses were found from the third month on height, from the sixth month on weight and from the eight month of life on head circumference. Blood pressure was higher specially 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after the first 600000 IU vit D megadose. Mean serum 1.25 (OH) 2 vit D, was consistently higher in patients given massive vitamin doses, (110 and 96 pg/ml at third and sixth month as compared with 55 pg/ml respectively in subjects under daily doses). No statistic other differences were found in other of blood measurements. Supplementation of 400 daily IU, is physiologically sounder as it promotes growth, avoids risk of intoxication and potential of transient induced hypertension at this age. Local recommendations favoring vit D megadoses for rickets prevention should be revised.
