Abstract

Sustaining dialysis and kidney care services in emergencies is highly dependent on the resilience of the health system and the quality and breadth of predisaster planning. Emergencies tend to occur in regions where health systems are not strong. This multiplies patient vulnerability. Patients with kidney diseases should be prepared in how to react in emergencies to best protect their health and their lives. The logistics of maintaining uninterrupted dialysis and transplant care should not be underestimated. Meeting these needs safely and fast can be enhanced through transparent and constructive engagement with all relevant stakeholders before and during disasters. This relies on robust data on service needs and capacity being available predisaster and the capacity to monitor and respond to the situation as it evolves in real time. Patients who are forced to evacuate may have special needs which require careful planning and reliable information sharing. Kidney care workers must be supported to provide the best possible care under the circumstances and be protected themselves against burnout and moral distress. Data collected about adequacy of responses and lessons learned after disaster can support heath systems resilience, future disaster responsiveness, and more effective postdisaster recovery.
