Abstract

The effect of the synoptic-scale wind on the predictability of landscape-induced atmospheric flow as a function of surface characteristics is studied by means of over 200 two-dimensional numerical simulations. The predictability measure is defined based on the domain-averaged signal to noise ratio. The decomposition of the signal into two different parts is also used to further understand the effect of the synoptic-scale wind on the mesoscale atmospheric predictability. It is emphasized that different predictability measures should be used for different purposes, and different predictability results can be obtained based on different measures. -from Authors
