Abstract

Confinement properties close to the H-mode power threshold are studied in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The results show that good confinement can be obtained close to the threshold with Type-I ELMs. The existence of Type-I ELMs does not necessarily require the heating power to be higher than the H-Mode power threshold, but it requires collisionality to be low enough. At higher collisionality Type-III ELMs replace the Type-I ELMs and confinement time is reduced by about 20%. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.
