Ostéonécrose des maxillaires dues aux bisphosphonates (2e partie): Expérience genevoise

Abstract

A retrospective study about 30 cases of osteonecrosis of the jaws associated to BPs therapy diagnosed in the Division of Stomatology, Oral Surgery and Radiology of the dental School of the University of Geneva is presented. Different clinical, radiological and histological characteristics are showed as well as evolution further to the treatment of this osteonecrosis. The osteonecrosis of jawbones represents the main undesirable effect of a treatment by nitrogen-containing BPs, but we have to distinguish kinds found in cancer patients from that found in patients treated for osteoporosis. From the beginning, our treatment attitude towards osteonecrosis was less passive than other clinicians: in severe cases the treatment decelerated the evolution and controlled the symptoms leading to a better quality of life for the patients. © Med Buccale Chir Buccale 2007.
