Abstract

Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) represent a significant evolution in the financial landscape, offering the potential to enhance payment efficiency, promote financial inclusion, and improve monetary policy. This paper explores the key benefits and challenges associated with CBDCs, highlighting successful implementations like China's Digital Yuan and the Bahamas' Sand Dollar, as well as delayed projects such as Sweden's e-Krona. A comparative analysis of wholesale and retail CBDC designs is presented, emphasizing their distinct purposes and implications. Despite their promise, CBDCs face challenges including privacy concerns, technological risks, and impacts on financial stability. The future outlook suggests ongoing developments and collaborations among central banks, with recommendations for policymakers to engage stakeholders, prioritize security, and develop flexible regulatory frameworks.
