Abstract
This study aims to determine the pattern of USB YPKP student communication in the WhatsApp (WA) social media group class using an ethnographic communication approach. The results of this study show some findings about the motives of students to become members of a diverse WA group. Then the languages used by members of the WA group range from Indonesian, regional languages (Sundanese, Javanese, Sumatran, Betawi, Papuan). The themes or topics of discussion also vary, although the majority and most are academic questions (the presence of lecturers, assignments of assignments, deadlines for collecting assignments, campus facilities). In addition to academic topics the topic of joke discussion is also a topic of daily discussion in the WA group. Another finding was the topic that was most avoided by members of the WA group, which was about politics because it was interpreted as a sensitive topic.
