Abstract

The stability of the laminar profile in pipe flow implies that the laminar profile and the turbulent dynamics coexist, raising the question about the border between the two. This border can be studied by tracking the time evolution of trajectories which neither decay nor grow towards the turbulent state. Independent of the choice of initial perturbation states in the border converge to a single state, which is dominated by a pair of downstream vortices.
