Abstract

Method Updates There are several AOAC Official Methods in the Fruit and Fruit Products topic area that have been adopted as Final Action in the last year. • 994.11 Benzoic Acid in Orange Juice, Liquid Chromatographic Method • 992.09 Sugar Beet-Derived Syrups in Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice 18O Measurements in Water, Stable Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometric Method • 993.05 L-Malic/Total Malic Acid Ratio in Apple Juice, Liquid Chromatographic Method (Total Malic Acid) Enzymatic Method (L-Malic Acid) The European Commission, through the Standards, Measurements, and Testing Program, has provided funding for collaborative studies to evaluate the HPLC determination of 6 groups of analytes in fruit juices: organic acids, anthocyanins, carotenoids, polymethoxyflavones, oligosaccharides, and nitrates. The interlaboratory studies to take place in 1999 will test the reliability and applicability of the methods, leading to harmonized analytical procedures.
