The efficacy of integrating assistive technology and the CAPE lesson planning framework toward improving students’ speaking skills

Abstract

To examine whether integrating Apple’s Siri with the CAPE lesson framework improves EFL speaking outcomes versus PPP. Method, a mixed-methods research design was used to provide evidence for the efficacy of this framework. Pre/Posttest and interview guides were used to collect data from 128 students assigned to control and experimental groups. After collecting data, the study found that the group using CAPE and Siri outperformed PPP and Siri on speaking scores. On the other hand, the interviewees highlighted motivation, pronunciation practice, and autonomous, low-anxiety speaking opportunities. Results obtained from this study were used to make the conclusion that pairing IPAs with a responsive framework (CAPE) is associated with improved speaking outcomes and positive learner experiences.
