The article's central argument points to the necessity of aligning training and specialisation within the context of the work performed by guidance counsellors so as to meet the demands of an old and necessary profession that has been unsatisfactorily met by the legislation put in place to regulate its training and functions. The study analyses the topic's dimensions, taking into consideration the most relevant legislative parameters: the European Qualifications Framework (EQF); the European Higher Education Area (EHEA); the Spanish University General Law (LOU, 2007); the Spanish General Education Law (LOE, 2006); the legislative and political space of the Autonomous Communities, and the available regulations regarding the design and develoment of the new university curricula and degrees.
