Abstract

Mining has had a great influence on human societies, permeating the riches of the soil and culture in equal proportion, which has led to profound changes in the individuals who dedicate themselves to this work and, in turn, to the municipalities to which they are part. In this historical article, the authors describe the socio-cultural characteristics, health and diseases presented in the gold mining of Marmato (Caldas) during the 19th century. Poor salubrity conditions and tropical and infectious diseases were constant during all century.
