Abstract

Transforming today’s energy landscape into sustainable energy systems requires a paradigm shift in electrical machine technologies that can enable efficient electromechanical energy conversion, robust control, and reliable integration of renewable energy. This review synthesizes recent advances and future directions in sustainable electrical machines, covering novel materials, high-efficiency machine designs, intelligent manufacturing pathways, and integration in renewable-energy applications. The survey focuses on major developments in permanent-magnet machines, superconducting technologies, and modern control systems, based on a structured examination of more than 232 peer-reviewed studies appearing between 2020 and 2025. The analysis reveals that next-generation electrical machines can achieve ultra-high efficiency alongside tangible sustainability improvements, particularly when advanced materials, loss-aware design and control, and circularity-oriented manufacturing strategies are jointly considered. Finally, the review outlines emerging challenges and research opportunities related to grid synchronization, energy storage integration, and life cycle sustainability that will be critical for future sustainable energy systems.
