Abstract

This study stems from the urgent need within Islamic Studies programs, particularly Qur’an and Sunnah Studies, to implement educational transformation and new initiatives that produce graduates capable of generating meaningful social impact for society and the ummah. The objective is to examine the requirements and challenges faced by educational institutions in remaining relevant and dynamic in contemporary contexts. Employing a qualitative approach, the study utilises textual and contextual analysis of library-based data to identify key themes. The findings reveal four essential requirements for change: outcomes of action research reports on the direction of Islamic Studies, traditional pedagogical approaches, current developments in digitalisation and artificial intelligence, and stakeholder demands. Four major challenges are also identified: the absence of a consultative body for Qur’an and Sunnah Studies, ineffective implementation of teaching and learning strategies, difficulties in producing adaptive and highly skilled graduates, and the need to align with the aspirations of universities, society, and the nation. The implications highlight the importance of educational transformation through six proposed action plans, including innovations in pedagogy and curriculum, strengthening research, and establishing a consultative body that must be comprehensively mobilised. In conclusion, educational transformation will not only enhance the quality of Qur’an and Sunnah Studies programs but also catalyse, advancing Islamic education in Malaysian higher education institutions.
