Abstract

Several studies that have been conducted previously on parents of children with special needs indicate primary caregivers; usually mothers, are at risk for mental health problems.This study aims to determine stress coping in mother with special needs children. This study uses a qualitative phenomenological method using data collection techniques through observation and interview. There are three informants in this study whose are mother of children with special needs. The results showed that among the three informants had different coping stress. The coping stress that was owned by informant I was more oriented to problem focus coping. Informants try to provide the best for their children and provide concrete solutions. The second informant has stress coping which is oriented more to the problem focus coping. This informants can reach this stage even though informants sometimes still appear emotionally angry and pinch when her child is tantrums. Meanwhile, informant III has stress coping which is more oriented to emotional focus coping because the informant does not want to be bothered with the condition of her child so that all the wishes of her child is always fulfilled. It seems as if the informants did not take any action to deal with the existing problems and resigned to the situation and condition of her special neeed child.
