The future of security and defence in the EU post-Brexit: The leap to integration

Abstract

In this paper we analyse the latest developments in the European Union in terms of security and defence; and we reflect on the evolution of this field in the EU post-Brexit. Paradoxically, after the EU referendum in the UK for the abandonment of the Union in 2016, the EU has implemented many innovative initiatives in the field of security and defence which, although contemplated in the Treaty of Lisbon, had not been able to materialise precisely because of the British opposition. The relevance of these initiatives leads us to venture that we are in the dawn of the emergence of a Union of Security and Defence that implies the leap to integration in this area of special relevance that concerns us in this paper.
