Abstract

Outlines the pre- and post-1960 distribution and natural history of British bumblebees (19 true bumblebees Bombus, 6 cuckoo bumblebees Psithyrus), and describes nests and their establishment in captivity, parasites, nest associates and foraging behaviour. Identification of species and sex and a quick-check key are figured, and a more comprehensive key is provided, with colour illustrations. Suggestions for research are also made. -P.J.Jarvis
