Abstract
Our food, fiber, and ornamental plants contain a hidden cost for pest control and insect damage of $200 per year for each citizen of the U. S. The corn earworm on the cover, Heliothis zea (Boddie), is an example of one of the commonest and most destructive pests in the U.S. In addition to injuring corn, it attacks cotton (where it is known as the cotton bollworm) and tomatoes (where it is know as the green tomato worm)
