Abstract

This chapter introduces Internet of Vehicles (IoV) and its applications. It starts by presenting the background, concept, and network architecture of IoV, and then analyzes the characteristics of IoV and the corresponding new challenges in IoV research and development. A description of enabling technologies is at the core of the chapter. MAC protocols and standards, for example, IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.11p/WAVE, and routing protocols, for example, AODV and OLSR, are introduced in detail. The other core part is the discussion of applications. A complete taxonomy is presented and different categories are discussed, including driving safety, efficiency service, intelligent traffic management, and informative services. At the end of chapter, directions of future IoV research are presented and discussed.
