Abstract
One of the biomaterial-processing industries that can utilize wood- alternative materials is com-ply board industry. This board is composite products manufactured from combinations of particleboard (as the core layer) and veneers (as the face outer and back outer layers, respectively). In this experiment, as the core layer for the com-ply board was particleboard shaped from the mixture of oil-palm wood particle and old newsprint in 3 consecutive proportions (w/w), i.e. 75:25, 50:50, and 25:75, then bonded together with 10% of urea-formaldehyde adhesive (based on dry weight of the mixture). Prior to the shaping of particleboard, the oil-palm wood particles were subjected to three kinds of treatment, i.e. soaking in cold water, soaking in hot water, and no-soaking (as control). Meanwhile, as the face and back layers of the com-ply board were red meranti wood veneers. The resulting com-ply board revealed its specific characteristics that could entirely or in part meet the JIS standards, as follows : (1) physic properties of the board, i.e. density, moisture content, thickness swelling, and water absorption, which ranged about consecutively 0.75-0.82 g/cm3, 9.16-11.06%, 14.06-31.52%, and 32.26-67.99%; and (2) mechanic properties, i.e. internal bond (1.15-4.93 kgf/cm2), MOE in bending (26,576.3- 57,785.6 kgf/cm2), and MOR in bending (223.78–530.77 kgf/cm2). Properties of com-ply boards that could meet the JIS were those with particle board core (layer) made from the mixture of oil-palm wood (no-soaking) and old newsprint, in 75:25 and 50:50 proportions.
