Distribution and Seasonal Growth of the Invasive Diatom Cymbella janischii in Tamagawa River System

Abstract

The degradation of ecosystem services in rivers due to the invasion and expansion of invasive attached diatoms, Cymbella janischii, is a grave concern. The distribution and seasonal growth of C. janischii in the Tamagawa River system were studied. In the upstream area of the Tamagawa River, C. janischii formed visually identifiable clusters resembling "dirty cotton balls". C. janischii was identified only under a microscope in the midstream area, but was not observed in the downstream area, and differences were observed between water areas. C. janischii was also distributed in a branch river that joined the upper midstream area of the Tamagawa River, but its concentration was negligible. In the upstream area of the Tamagawa River, C. janischii formed clusters from April to May. During this C. janischii bloom period, the water temperature in the upstream area of the Tamagawa River coincided well with the temperature of the rivers in which C. janischii grows in North America. 1 ） 公益財団法人東京都環境公社東京都環境科学研究所 〒136-0075 東京都江東区新砂 1-7-5 2 ） 株式会社日本海洋生物研究所 〒142-0042 東京都品川区豊町 4-3-16 ¶ 連絡先：ishii-y@tokyokankyo.jp 1．はじめに 河川の類型指定水域（2,564 水域）における 2018 年度 現在の BOD 環境基準達成率は 94.6％ 1） と高い水準とな っており，全国的に河川の水質環境は改善されてきてい る。しかしながら近年になり，水質が良好な河川の上流 域等において，強腐水性の流水中等でみられるミズワタ に似た付着物の発生が報告されるようになった 2，3） 。ミズ ワタは細菌 Sphaerotilus の発生によるものであるが，清 澄な河川におけるミズワタ状の付着物は，外来の付着珪 藻 Cymbella janischii （A.W.F.Schmidt） De Toni の大量 繁茂によるもので，その形態的な特徴からミズワタクチ ビルケイソウと称することが提唱されている 3） 。 C. janischii の原産地は北米大陸で，太平洋岸北西部の 固有種とされているが 4） ，北東部の Connecticut 州におい ても北西部の Idaho 州産の C. janischii と遺伝的に近縁の 同種が優占していることが報告されている 5） 。C. janischii は河川の珪藻類としては比較的大型であることが特徴 で 2） ，アメリカ北西部から得られた C. janischii の殻長お よび殻幅は，それぞれ平均で 215 μm（105-383 μm）お よび 54 μm（40-68 μm）とされている（いずれも n ＝ 50） 4） 。本種は細胞下部より無色の粘液柄を分泌し，母細 胞が残した粘液柄の上に姉妹細胞の柄が伸びるため，粘 液柄は二叉分枝する構造になっており，全体として樹枝 状に発達した偽群体を形成する 2） 。C. janischii によるミ ズワタ状の付着物は厚さが 3 cm に達するとの報告もな されている 6） 。 日本国内では，大分県の筑後川上流域で 2004 年から実 施されていたアユの食性調査において胃内容物から C. janischii の殻が確認されたものが最初の記録 2） と考えら れる。これまでに，長崎県を除く，福岡・佐賀・大分・ 熊本・宮崎・鹿児島の九州 6 県，東日本の新潟・長野・ 静岡・山梨・ 神奈川・東京・埼玉・群馬・栃木・福島で 同種が確認されている 7） 。山梨県の富士川水系の荒川で は，C. janischii の繁茂率と，確認されたアユの数には強 い負の相関があり，放流アユの定着への影響が指摘され
