Abstract
Much attention has been devoted to the effects of artificial intelligence on individual performance for isolated tasks. To predict the indirect and longer-term effects of artificial intelligence in organizations, however, we need to better understand how artificial intelligence–enabled technology affects work that is interdependent and completed by multiple persons in collaboration. We draw from the organizational learning and strategic management literature to develop a formal mathematical model that reflects the dynamic, interdependent, non-linear relationships in the organizational systems in which artificial intelligence is increasingly embedded. Using the methodology of system dynamics, we model individual, collective, and artificial intelligence learning processes and their effects on performance over time. Our results provide insights into how artificial intelligence affects organizational learning and capabilities.
