Abstract

An ultrafine aerosol generator (UFAG) has been developed for generating aerosols under 200 Å in diameter. The UFAG is built around a premixed propane-air flat flame burner. Although the unseeded flat flame did not generate detectable aerosols, it produced aerosols when seeded with about 10-8 gm/cm-3 of a seed material. During this study, when sodium chloride was the seed material, the UFAG produced particle concentrations of 109/cm3 with a mean diameter between 25 and 100 Å and a geometric standard deviation between 1.4 and 1.7. The aerosol size distribution parameters can be controlled by changing the experimental parameters. © 1984 Elsevier Science Publishing Co., Inc.
