Abstract

A discussion is given on the state of research on fusion reactors: the basic physics of fusion versus fission; ultimate fusion: clean, safe, and abundant; near-term fusion: radioactive tritium; inertially-confined plasmas; confinement by a magnetic bottle; toroids: tokamaks and stellarators; scientific breakeven expected in 1986; pulsing as a major drawback; and alternative confinement concepts.
