Abstract

Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorders that affect, as core symptoms, the neurodevelopment of social communication, of the interest pattern and stereotyped behavior. Most of the people with autism have other neurodevelopmental alterations or mental health problems associated and clinical presentation differs among people with autism and at different times of their lives. Their mortality is increased and they usually die before expected for their age. The associated causes include other medical problems, self-harm behavior, suicide and unadapted hospitals. There are effective psychological treatments (no pharmacological treatments) for the core symptoms of autism. The pharmacological treatments are effective for psychiatric comorbidities, which are frequently associated with autism.
