Abstract

Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi’s Tafsīr Mafatīhul Ghayb is an interpretive book that uses personal reasoning (ijtihad) to analyze Quranic verses. The author’s diverse expertise in language, jurisprudence, science, philosophy, and theology influenced his approach significantly. While Imam Al-Razi did not dismiss foundational methods such as Quranic verses, hadith, and the words of companions, the extent of his reliance on hadith in his interpretation is called into question. This study examines Imam Al-Razi’s use of hadith in this tafsīr through qualitative text and content analysis. Findings showed that hadith usage primarily centres around jurisprudential matters, with a lack of rigorous selection. Weak hadiths are included without clear verification from their origins.  This research contributes to understanding Imam Al-Razi’s hadith-based arguments and provides recommendations for using Tafsīr Mafatīhul Ghayb as a study resource. Overall, this tafsīr’s approach is characterized by personal reasoning, though its reliance on hadith, particularly for clarifying Quranic meanings, remains as a source of concern.
