Sprites as evidence of vertical gravity wave structures above mesoscale thunderstorms

Abstract

Large area multicell thunderstorms lead to the formation of vertically oriented cylindrical structures of gravity waves at mesospheric altitudes closely resembling those observed in optical emissions associated with transient luminous glows called sprites.
