Abstract

Tourism is a factor of local development in rural areas, according to what can be inferred from the experience of the San Francisco Zapotitlán municipality, in the department of Retalhuleu, Guatemala. Here is located the recreational centre IRTRA, which receives both local visitors and foreign tourists. Between 1998 and 2006, such municipality registered an important reduction in poverty levels, bigger than in other munici‑ palities. The hypothesis defended in this article is that such reduction is associated with the economic spillover generated by tourism, especially the domestic one. To prove such a hypothesis, a difference of proportional averages contrast is made between the analysed municipality and the other municipalities of the department, regarding poverty levels and their reduction. The results do not allow to refute the formulated hypothesis.
