Abstract

This paper has as central purpose to provide subsidies to chemistry teachers aiming to work with different methodologies in their classes. Thereunto, we use the approach of a Brazilian scholar intellectual, José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, who is very known as Independence Patriarch, being his path in the sciences unknown to majority. We propose the use of the teaching strategy study of case as alternative for application in class. The study of case aims to attract the student to research about the discovery of the minerals petalite and spodumene, and from this, the students realize the importance of this discovery for society. This paper brings subsides for the teacher learn about the trajectory of the researcher from the biography and description of some works performed by José Bonifácio. Later, we approach the teaching strategy and its application in class, in which the teacher will have the opportunity to familiarize their students with the history of José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, taking into consideration the historical context of the early nineteenth century. They can use this proposal at the time when the periodic table and the chemical elements are being discussed.
