Mild cognitive impairment: a case report

Abstract

This article presents a case report of a 68 year old woman with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In this case, it is difficult to establish a clear diagnosis. The diagnostic criteria of MCI are quite imprecise. In this case, the patient was alarmed by her memory impairment. She was consequently diagnosed as having Alzheimers Disease (AD) in its early stages, and was treated with donepezil. To conclude, the concept of MCI is not widely accepted in Japan. It is not considered as a clinical entity, but as a research one only. Since no distinct criteria for MCI have been defined, no clinical trial for MCI can be conducted. Therefore, patients in Japan with memory impairment may be diagnosed with AD and treated accordingly. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
