Abstract
Oxides produced in Al-Mg (2-12%) alloys oxidized at 923 K to 1173 K for 10. 8 ks (3h) were MgO or/and MgAl//2O//4. The reactions are Mg plus 1/2O//2 yields MgO and MgO plus 2Al plus 3/2O//2 yields MgAl//2O//4. MgO was produced in the form of granules around pores and was irregularly distributed near the surface. MgAl//2O//4 crystallized into a spinel structure and formed a homogeneously mixed layer.
