O Brasil e a ideia de "América Latina" em perspectiva histórica

Abstract

Este ensaio sobre a história das ideias e a história das relações internacionais examina as origens do conceito de "América Latina" e discute o fato de que nem os intelectuais hispano-americanos e brasileiros, nem os governos hispano-americanos e brasileiros consideravam o Brasil parte da "América Latina" - expressão que se referia somente à América Espanhola - pelo menos até a segunda metade do século XX, quando os Estados Unidos e o resto do mundo exterior começaram a pensar o Brasil como parte integrante de uma região chamada "Latin America". Encore aujourd'hui, les gouvernements et les intellectuels brésiliens, sauf, peut-être, ceux de gauche, ne sont pas entièrement convaincus que le Brésil fait partie de l'Amérique Latine.This essay in the history of ideas and the history of international relations examines the origins of the concept "América Latina", and argues that neither Spanish American nor Brazilian intellectuals, and neither Spanish American nor Brazilian governments considered Brazil part of "América Latina" - which generally referred to Spanish America only - at least until the second half of the 20th century, when the United States, and the rest of the outside world, began to think of Brazil as an integral part of a region called "Latin America". Even now Brazilian governments and Brazilian intellectuals, except perhaps on the Left, had no deep engagement with Latin America.
