Abstract
The author discusses the history and background of the Michelson-Morley 'ether drift' experiment. Also discussed are the mechanics of the interferometer as well as the theoretical aspects of the experiment. Both Albert A. Michelson and Edward W. Morley are examined from personal as well as professional perspectives. Their effect on the field of spectroscopy is also traced.
