Abstract
Based on the "collapse load" analysis, a method is developed to predict the ultimate strength of a reinforced concrete beam that contains a large rectangular opening and is subjected to a point load. According to the method, the distribution of external shear between the chord members and the collapse load of the beam depends not only on the cross-sectional properties, but also on the size and location of the opening. Test results available in the literature are compared with the theoretical predictions. A good agreement between the theory and experimental results is obtained © ASCE.
