Infección por SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) en Pediatría

Abstract

The infection due to coronavirus is a global emergency. During the last months, the fastest increase in the number of cases and deaths by this cause has occurred, especially in older people and those who suffer from hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and other chronic diseases, the severity of the symptoms in children and adolescents is less and the mortality is really low, but those immersed in a state of immunosuppression, undernourishment, medical comorbidities, and the lack of hygiene have a bigger risk of developing the infection. The reduction of these risk factors and adopting the proper preventive measures will be helpful in order to limit the spread since today there is no effective treatment or specific immunization for treating this serious problem. This revision stands out the problems and challenges of the infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 in children and adolescents. RESUMEN La infección por coronavirus es una emergencia global. En los últimos meses, ha ocurrido un rápido aumento en el número de casos y muertes por esta causa, sobre todo en las personas mayores y las que padecen hipertensión, diabetes, obesidad y otras enfermedades de curso crónico. En niños y adolescentes, la gravedad de los síntomas es menor y la mortalidad es real-mente baja, pero aquéllos con algún estado de inmunosupresión, desnutrición, comorbilidades médicas y la falta de higiene tienen un mayor riesgo de contraer la infección. La reducción de estos factores de riesgo y adoptar las medidas de prevención apropiadas serán útiles para limitar su propagación, ya que hasta la fecha no existe un tratamiento efectivo o inmunización específica para tratar este grave problema. Esta revisión destaca los problemas y desafíos de la infección por SARS-CoV-2 en niños y adolescentes.
