Abstract

Background: Refugees and asylum seekers face multiple psychosocial stressors. One approach to promote mental health is a peer engagement model. However, insights into the successful implementation of such an approach in refugee mental health in Germany are relatively scarce. Objectives: The objective was to elicit perspectives of refugees and asylum seekers regarding a group-based peer approach to psychoeducation and psychosocial stabilization (Mind-Spring) in a community setting, as well as to identify barriers and facilitating factors of participation. Methods: Following the pilot implementation of peer-based psychosocial groups in a region of Baden-Württemberg, eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with two peer trainers and six individuals who had been addressed as potential participants. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed using a qualitative content analysis method. Results: Participation in the psychosocial intervention was found to be based on heterogeneous needs and expectations. Factors that supported participation were personal outreach, the possibility to communicate in one’s own language, and the proximity of the group activity to the participants’ place of residence. Fear of stigmatization and a lack of trust in those carrying out the intervention and other participants were found to hinder participation. Conclusions: Low intensity access, as well as tailoring towards refugees’ needs and expectations should be considered when implementing psychosocial interventions for refugees. Acceptability is enhanced by balancing peer- and otherness, as well as by linking the interventions to professional healthcare services.
