The Impact of the Numerical Indication of Plural Forms in Translating the Meanings of the Holy Quran into English

Abstract

Objectives: This study explores how translators handle broken plurals in the meanings of the Holy Quran, their awareness of the numerical significance within these structures, and the methods they use to convey the numerical connotation. Methods: Using a descriptive methodology and text analysis, selected examples from the Holy Quran were collected, focusing on infrequent plural patterns alongside corresponding examples of abundance. The presence of the numerical concept in these plurals was discussed across various translations. Results: The findings indicate that no English equivalent fully captures the numerical connotation present in Arabic broken plurals. Translators demonstrated an awareness of the connotation of scarcity and abundance in plurals, presumably through familiarity with interpretations that highlight their significance in Quranic expression. Some translators attempted to convey the numerical connotation using linguistic devices to express the meaning of reduction or augmentation. However, overall, translators did not consistently reflect this awareness in their translations, as most examples lacked attempts to approximate the connotation of scarcity or abundance when conveying the meanings of the Holy Quran. Conclusion: This study concludes that translators should consider the numerical connotation of scarcity or abundance when translating the meanings of the Holy Quran. They should employ linguistic means to convey this connotation in the target language while preserving the morphological connotation present in the pattern of broken plurals in the source language.
