In general, metal music subcultures are often associated with masculine culture, and Indonesia has not been spared from this music wave. This condition makes Indonesian women who are incorporated in the metal music subculture difficult to escape the structural straps that has made them bounded by men’s discrimination. As time goes on, Indonesian women are slowly accepted in the underground metal subculture world although they often reap the pros and cons of the general public especially when hijabers (women’s veiled) began to appear in various Indonesian metal communities. In the current millennium era, the involvement of hijabers in the subculture of metal music creates a new phenomenon. Indonesian hijabers have adopted a subculture lifestyle of metal music using metal fashion as a representation of the cultural identity. In this study, research focused on six hijabers in a metal community in the city of Jakarta and Bandung, West Java. The study uses ethnographic and interview method in collecting primary data. The purpose of this study is focused on assessing the practice of metal fashion and its relationship with the identity of hijabers in the metal music community. The observation of fashion consumption of lifestyle as well as the attitudes and behaviors of hijabers in metal subculture gives a broader understanding of the "hijab metal" phenomenon. Fashion can be regarded as one of the meanings used by "hijabers metal" (hijabers whose interests are in the metal community) in communicating their identity in order to fend off the Indonesian mentality of the metal music subculture, which always associates young people with deviant things.
