Abstract

Truancy does not constitute a new form of deviance. From the moment regular attendance became compulsory, it was subjected to resistance. Though this confrontation between the norm of attendance and truancy existed at once, it has been constructed as a social issue only recently. Only between 1990's and 2000's, when this question was associated to suburban kids, constituted as both dangerous and in danger, was it imposed and theorised as a central domestic issue demanding collective responses. From the analysis of official documents, institutional reports, political speeches and media documents, I intend to recount some of the main stages of that period. I have endeavoured to study the ways of saying and doing, worked through the process of collective socialization that have constructed the practice of truancy as a domestic security issue.
