Abstract

In this review, we describe phenomenology, pathophysiology and epidemiology of polyneuropathies. The outline comprises the complete spectrum of different aetiologies, including metabolic, diabetic, hereditary immune-mediated, inflammatory, infectious and toxic factors. We present natural courses, diagnostic strategies as well as recent advances in the treatment of this heterogenous group of neurological diseases. Special emphasis is on diabetic polyneuropathies due to their clinical importance.
