Abstract

Equimolar reactions between adducts of SnClxR4-x (R = Ph, x = 1, 2, 4) and benzamidine hydrochloride monohydrate (bzaHCl.H 2O) in methanol has afforded [bzaH][SnCl2Ph 3].1/2H2O (1), [bzaH][SnCl3Ph 2].1/2H2O (2) and [bzaH]2[SnCl 6].H2O (3). The compounds were characterised by spectroscopic methods such as infrared, 119Sn NMR and Mössbauer spectroscopy as well as microanalysis, molar conductance and melting point. In solution, the 119Sn NMR revealed 6-coordinated Sn(IV) species for those complexes. In the solid-state, the Mössbauer spectroscopic technique has pointed out five- and six- fold coordination for complex 2 and five- and six-fold coordination for complex 1 and 3 respectively. The overall resulting data are conclusive about the formation of ionic species resulting from chloride attack on the organotin precursors.
