Papermaking: The Historical Diffusion of an Ancient Technique

Abstract

This chapter explores how and when techniques of paper making diffused from China across Eurasia to the Mediterranean region and from there to the rest of Europe in the period between 600 and 1500. It also investigates the factors that enhanced and impeded this spatial diffusion of knowledge, including the availability of raw materials and adoption of differing technologies, as well as the roles of religion, trade, physical environment, emigration, imports, and exports.
