A multi-perspective analysis of videographic data on the performance of spirit possession in Dominican Vodou

Abstract

s The article is concerned w ith spirit possession during public Vodou celebrations in the Southwest of the Dom inican Republic , By analysing videographic material archived at the Phonogrammarchiv of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, features of Dom inican Vodou are described from three int erlocking perspectives, w ith particular emphasis on the enact ment of the divine. These perspectives include the view of the researcher, a medical anthropologist , as well as the interpretations of a local specialist in the performance of the genre, and the perceptions and associations of a musicologist working at the Phonogrammarchiv preparing the collection for deposit and eventual access by arch ive patrons. Based on th is multiperspectivity, the article prov ides a detailed description of spirit possession, including a wider perspective by refe rring to theoretical issues from different cultural areas and research disciplines, and it finally explores what constitutes a successful possession performance, Der Beitrag befasst sich mit Besessenheit im Vodou der Dom in ikanischen Republik unter besonderer BerQcksichtigung iiffentlicher Zerernonien , Mittels Analyse videographische r Daten, die im Phonogrammarchiv der bsterreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften archi-viert slnd, werden die Charakteristika des Dom inikanischen Vodou aus dre i einander ergan-zenden Perspektiven herausgearbeitet, wobei der Fokus auf performativen Aspekten liegt. Enthalten sind die Sichtweisen de r Forscherin, einer Medizinanthropologin, des Weiteren die Interpretationen eines lokalen Praktizierenden von Vodou sowie die Assoziationen eines Mus ikologen , der am Phonogrammarchiv das Material fOr Archivierungs-und Ansichtszwe-cke aufbereitet hat, Ausgehend von dieser Multiperspektivltat beschre ibt der Beitrag das Phanornen Besessenheit detailliert und mit Blick auf andere kulturelle Kontexte und theore-tische Konzepte versch iedener Disziplinen. Er w idmet sich zudem der Frage, was zur erfolg-reichen Performance von Besessenheit letztendlich notwendig ist.
