Abstract

The Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA), West Bay Sediment Diversion Project is located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, 4.7 miles above Head of Passes. The project included the excavation of an uncontrolled diversion channel through the bank of the Mississippi River. Construction was completed in November 2003. The project was designed to restore and maintain approximately 9,831 acres of fresh to intermediate marsh in the West Bay area by diverting fresh water and sediment from the Mississippi River over the 20-year project life.
